   'Broadband' Connectivity

'Broadband Internet access' or just 'broadband' refers to internet connections exceeding the capabilities of conventional analogue and ISDN connections.  The capabilities of these connections are measured in terms of bandwidth - as the ability to transfer data at a certain rate.  Data is represented as 0's and 1's, called bits.  Thus, the capability is measured as the number of bits transferred per second, and hence, the more bits that can be transferred per second, the 'faster' the connection.

How does CTEC's Broadband compare to similar products from other vendors?

Telkom's ADSL and vSAT and the cellular network operators' 3G are CTEC's competitors.  To view a comparison between CTEC's product and these contenders regarding aspects such as monthly fees, capping and data rates, click on the link below.

   VoIP

Voice over IP (VoIP)  makes use of technology to establish voice connections, i.e. telephone calls, with the aid of a broadband Internet connection.  The service we are providing allows you to make a call to any person with a telephone number - locally, internationally, fixed line or mobile.

Regular equipment can be used with an adaptor to make the calls.  The person being called do not require a broadband connection in order to receive the call.  The broadband connection must be active in order to make use of VoIP.

There are THREE ways in which VoIP can be utilised:

  • PC 2 PC
The connections make use of software and a headset/speakers with microphone is required.

  • ATA's
The ATA (Analogue Telephone Adaptor) connects a regular telephone or fax machine to the Internet via PC / Direct Internet connection.  The telephone and/or fax machine is connected to the adapter and the adapter connects to the Internet Connection.

  • VoIP Instruments
These telephones looks and functions like regular instruments and can be connected directly to the PC / Internet Connection (broadband port).

The main advantage of VoIP is the reduction in cost in comparison to the conventional manner in which calls are made.  Below a comparision of the costs between conventional and VoIP telephony costs.
